This piece was written for choreographer Jeanine McCain (Assistant Professor of Dance, Ursinus College). When Jeanine approached me about the piece her vision was to create a work that explored our relationship with the past, where we are in the present, and where we are going. I loved the idea and challenge of creating a work that has such big themes. This piece actually had several incarnations before settling on this final version. I wanted the music to have a strong sense of longing and still be expectant and hopeful. I also wanted to convey moments of high activity while the music progressed at a slow, but steady pace. The Past is But a Fragment uses several guitars (5 electric, and one classical), electric bass, some synths, and string samples.
